Time & Location

03 Jun 2023, 13:00 – 04 Jun 2023, 15:00

Weoley Castle, Weoley Castle, Birmingham B29, UK

About the Event

We tend to think of our medieval history with clashes of swords, plagues, and damsels in distress. But storytelling in the Middle Ages was much more diverse and queer than that!

The afternoon begins with a tour of the site exploring the architecture, construction, and layout. The ruins of Weoley Castle are over 750 years old, and the site is one of the oldest buildings still visible in Birmingham. Learn about the Lords of Dudley, the castle’s original owners and explore what their lives would have been like during the Middle Ages.

We'll then be joined by Dr Liam Lewis, medievalist, writer and Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham, to tell some weird and wonderful stories with music from the time.

His talk will introduce you to some of the marvellous trans saints and queer knights whose stories may have been told at Weoley Castle. Dr Lewis will show how the LGBTQ+ community has a long history, with discussions about gender switching and pronouns extending right back 700 years and beyond.
